Niagara Lane Office Refurbishment

STATUS:
Completed 2008

−Situated in a historic 1887 building in one of Melbourne’s iconic laneways. 1:1 Architects transformed the original furniture warehouse from a former artist studio/residence into their new offices to accommodate their growing staff numbers. The refurbishment features a new kitchen and bathroom and an upgrade of all services. Integrating heritage elements with contemporary functionality the design studio, boardroom and basement function area are connected over three levels by a barrel-hoist pulley used by the site’s original occupants.

−The main design principles were to enhance the original structure of the building, using a minimal palette to create a lighter space while introducing new elements such as the kitchen and bathroom using material and colour. Indirect lighting was used throughout to enhance the natural lighting throughout the space, while feature pendants were used in zones such as reception and the lounge. New joinery was designed to maximise space and functionality, while most existant office furniture was reused and a new reception desk was designed as a central point of the office.
