–The Modular Starter House was our response to The Starter Home Design Competition for the Department of Building and Housing (New Zealand). The design proposes a home characterised by flexible, functional spaces that is affordable for first-home buyers and can adapt with the occupant over time.
–Using two different sized prefabricated pods (modules) allowed for differing configurations of living spaces according to the orientation of the site and provides the option of adding additional modules to the starter home when family size increases. Houses enjoy a double height living space made by two vertically stacked pods, giving focus to the living space and providing a dialogue to the surrounding external landscape.
–Hydronic floor heating systems use pipes laid in the concrete floor slab to circulate heated water and high level openings allow for heat extraction from the main living space providing natural ventilation.
